FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The following are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Kaytee.

NOTE: If you have a health concern with your bird or small animal, please contact your local veterinarian for assistance.

1.  Where can I find Kaytee pet products?
Kaytee Products can be located at fine professional pet retail stores throughout the United States and the World. To locate a store nearest you, visit Kaytee's store locator for both the U.S. Store Locator and an International Locator. For additional assistance, please contact Kaytee Customer Service at 1-800-KAYTEE-1, or email us at customerservice@kaytee.com.

2.  How do I convert my bird or small animal from a seed based diet to a processed food?
Click on one of the following Technical Focus pages to get the best information:
- New Food Conversion Recommendations for Cage Birds
- New Food Conversion Recommendations for Small Animals

3.  Are there any nutritional differences between the colored pieces in the exact® Rainbow diets?
The exact® Original and Rainbow diets are formulated for each specific bird or small animal. The different shapes, sizes and colored pieces that are in the Rainbow products have the same ingredients and nutritional value that are formulated for that specific animal. Therefore the animal is getting all the nutrition they need in each of the pieces no matter what color or shape it is. The only product that has a slight ingredient difference is the yellow pieces that are in the Rainbow Rabbit Food.

4.  Are the colors in your products all natural?
The colors used in our product are not all natural. We do use USDA approved colors that are used in pharmaceuticals and other-human grade products.

5.  Why do you use ethoxyquin as a preservative?
Kaytee does include the preservative or antioxidant, ethoxyquin as an ingredient in the fortified foods and treats we manufacture. The exact® product line contains ethoxyquin or a natural preservative (mixed tocopherols) depending on the product. Antioxidants prevent the destruction of nutrients, and prevent rancidity (fat oxidation) which creates off-flavors and off-odors that dramatically decrease palatability and food consumption. Ethoxyquin is an FDA approved and dependable antioxidant. Kaytee formulates the products with levels of ethoxyquin less than the recommended use and has been tested and fed to over 100 species of birds at the Kaytee Avian Research Center for over 17 years with no related concerns. For more information please see the Kaytee Technical Focus, Antioxidants and Preservatives.

6.  How do you hand-feed a baby pet bird?
If you have no experience hand-feeding baby birds, we recommend you contact a professional breeder or pet store that has an experienced hand-feeder to assist you. In the meantime please check out the Kaytee website for more information on hand-feeding.

7.  When will my baby bird start weaning from hand-feeding to adult food?
When you begin to notice your baby bird is picking things up then you can introduce adult food to the bird. As you see that they are eating the adult food you will begin to cut back on the amount of hand-feeding being offered. For information on the approximate age of weaning and helpful tips on weaning, please see the Kaytee Technical Focus - Weaning Tips.

8.  Can I feed my bird or small animal a product formulated for a different bird or small animal?
We recommend feeding a food that has been specifically formulated for your particular bird or animal, as they have their own specific nutritional needs. Hamsters and gerbils have similar nutritional needs and can eat the same foods. However, guinea pigs need a food that is formulated for guinea pigs because they need vitamin C and rabbits need a food with higher fiber content. If you have a question about a specific bird or small animal, please e-mail us at customerservice@kaytee.com and we will be happy to assist you.

9.  What do I do with the baby wild bird I found outside?
We understand when a wild baby bird or injured adult is found that our first reaction is to do what we can to help. However, it is our responsibility to inform you that the Migratory Song Bird Act states that individuals cannot possess any migratory or non-migratory bird species unless transporting to a rehabilitation facility or DNR warden.

If a wounded or orphaned bird is found, you may only keep them for 24 hours in order to transport. Do not feed! Please keep the bird quiet and warm. Transport as soon as possible, because each bird has specific dietary and health concerns that will need attention. Only people with federal and state licenses can legally possess an injured or orphaned bird for care.

Therefore, we recommend that you contact your local wildlife center, wildlife rehabilitation center, or DNR office. Your local veterinarian may also know of a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in your area they can refer you to.

10.  Do you have a product satisfaction guarantee?
Kaytee takes pride in the quality products that we manufacture. If you are not completely satisfied with your Kaytee product purchase, return the unused portion of the product with your store receipt to Kaytee for a full refund:
