KAYTEE® is Celebrating Spring Wings at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary

05.16.11

KAYTEE Products, Inc., a leader in wild bird food manufacturing, is proud to partner with the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary in Green Bay to celebrate the Springs Wings “International Migratory Bird Day” event on Saturday, May 21st.

This day marks the month our beautiful migrating songbirds return back to Wisconsin.  KAYTEE will sponsor some great fun activities, with a focus on education about migrating birds that can be commonly found in our area and what we can do to welcome them properly back to our yards.  We will have a “star” bunny on-hand from the KAYTEE Learning Center and fabric bunny ear giveaways, free wild bird identification magnets, window clings for the kids to color, plant-a-sunflower activity, fun fact sheets on migrating birds, coupons, a product display and registration to win a Wild Bird Feeder & Wild Bird Food prize, to be drawn later that day.  KAYTEE will be at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary from 10am-2pm on Saturday May 21st

Wisconsin & Central/South America share over 100 species of migratory birds, some of which are common in our backyards.  The Northern/Baltimore Oriole, Indigo Bunting, Rose-Breasted Grosbeak & Ruby-Throated Hummingbird are among some of the species returning to our area starting in May.  These birds are members of a group called Neotropical migrants.  This means that these birds spend their non-breeding season (September – April) in Central & South America.  Some Central American countries, such as Costa Rica, have estimated that over 5 BILLION birds pass through there every year.

On a typical night in May, approximately three million birds cross the southern border of Wisconsin, migrating to northward destinations.  During the heaviest nights, there may be up to 30 million migrants passing into Wisconsin.  Migrating birds can travel as far as 16,000 miles to reach their destination.  Most migrating birds travel at an altitude between 500-2000 feet.  However, some geese & vultures have been seen as high as 37,000 feet – higher than mountains!  Each species of bird follows their own migratory path for flight, but the hummingbird, the smallest of the migrating birds, travels 600 miles NONSTOP across the Gulf of Mexico!

When these birds arrive in Wisconsin after their long flight, they are in desperate need of a few basic things: Food, water and nesting materials.  Birds fuel their bodies for migration with body fat.  In preparation for migration, they build fat reserves up to 50% of their body weight.  It is essential that we provide the proper types of food & a clean water source to help them replenish their bodies after their migration and prepare for their next life event - nesting.  KAYTEE is proud to offer high quality bird foods and bird feeders that help fill the essential needs of all of our songbirds.  Our new KAYTEE Midwest Regional Blend™ Wild Bird Food is specially formulated and proven to attract more birds.  It is specifically developed to provide just what the birds in our area eat and need to be healthy.

We look forward to seeing people of all ages at Bay Beach on Saturday, May 21st for this great fun event! For more info visit www.baybeachwildlife.com.
