Canaries have been kept as pets for centuries since the Spaniards conquered the Canary Islands in 1478. Most people keep male canaries because of their beautiful songs. Breeder enthusiasts enjoy the many varieties of canaries, focusing on songs and colors.

In the wild, this species is credited as the true wild canary from the Canary Islands - the basis for the entire canary fancy. The true wild canary is approximately five inches long and olive-green in color.
