Products and product lots that do not appear on the list are not subject to this recall.
This recall is being initiated due to an elevated amount of vitamin D that was unintentionally added in an isolated mixing batch during the manufacturing process.
No other Kaytee bird foods are involved in this recall.
Q2. What in the food is making the birds sick?High levels of Vitamin D in the formula increase the risk for development of renal disease and potentially renal failure. History of supplementation of the diet with calcium, phosphorus, or vitamin D should be obtained and recorded, as this can contribute to the etiology and complicate the diagnosis. History of concurrent drug treatment (e.g. aminoglycoside antibiotics) should be obtained and recorded, as this can contribute to the etiology and complicate the diagnosis.
Q3. What are clinical signs of hypervitaminosis D in birds? The clinical signs may include:
- Crop stasis
- Stunting or delayed development
Q4. What is the recommended treatment for affected baby birds?Treatment may vary based on the extent of clinical signs and condition of the birds. Birds may need to be treated with supportive care for renal disease, i.e. fluid therapy and tube feeding. Veterinarians should use treatments tailored to meet the individual needs of their patient.
Q5. What should consumers do if they have Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Macaw with the recalled code dates?Customers who purchased these products should review the “Best Before Code (dates)” and to see if they fall within the recalled product date ranges. Customers may call Kaytee at 1-800 Kaytee1 (800 529-8331) or email us at email@example.com for additional information to receive reimbursement for their purchase.
Q6. What laboratory tests will be helpful for diagnosis of hypervitaminosis D?Serum uric acid, calcium, and phosphorus are commonly increased in birds with renal failure. If you are presented morbid or dead birds, a necropsy with gross examination of the kidneys is needed. In advanced cases, pathognomonic changes include enlarged swollen kidneys with pale discoloration (tan to white) from excess mineralization with visible uroliths in the ureters. In the absence of these pathognomonic changes upon gross necropsy, histologic evaluation of the kidneys, heart, and lungs may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Q7. What should I tell bird owners who fed Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Macaw in suspected cases who want to file for reimbursement of veterinary bills?Kaytee will work with pet owners individually on a case-by-case basis to handle their individual needs appropriately. Required documentation includes proof of purchase of the affected (recalled) product, all medical records pertaining to the case, including all medical notes, diagnostic test results, treatments and patient history. All Kaytee products are guaranteed and consumers can receive a full refund for all recalled products.
