Guinea Pig

One of the friendliest and fun small animals is the Guinea Pig. From their quiet squeaks to their warm snuggles, Guinea Pigs provide hours of excitement for the entire family. The Guinea Pig, or “cavy” based on its scientific name, Cavia porcellus, is a very friendly animal that greets another Cavy by touching noses. Caring for Guinea Pigs is easy. A simple cage is a great start for your fuzzy pal. Several Guinea Pigs may be kept in the same cage, if it's large enough.

They cannot climb, but they can hop or jump over small obstacles. Guinea Pigs are also very smart, quickly learning sounds, like the opening of a bag of food or the refrigerator. These sounds may get them to whistle or squeak because they're so excited! They may even stand up and beg for food.

Your Guinea Pig could have long, dense fur like the Coronet, or short hair like the American. Markings vary, too, from all black like the Peruvian, to multi-colored like the Abyssinian or just a white patch on the head of a brown cavy like the White Crested Guinea Pig.
