White-crowned SparrowThe distinct black and white cap sets this sparrow apart from other "little brown birds." The White-throated Sparrow also has a striped crown but it also has a white throat. Western Scrub JayMore slender with a relatively longer tail than the Steller's Jay, this bird's markings include a white throat and a gray back and ear patch. This is a common park and yard visitor. Steller's JayA member of the Corvidae family which includes magpies, crows and ravens, this dark-crested bird catches live food. Song SparrowThis friendly, attractive sparrow is very common around the country and you can hear its song throughout the winter. Both males and females look alike and have a central spot on the streaked breast to identify it. Red-wing BlackbirdWith red epaulettes blazoning in the morning sunshine, the Red-wing Blackbird's call signals the arrival of spring as they return from Central America. The blackbird is strongly territorial as it woos females with its song. The females are rarely seen at feeders, but the reason for this behavior is not known. |

Northern FlickerAble to extend their tongues three inches beyond their bills, these woodpeckers are "ant eaters," spending most of their time foraging on the ground. Watch for the typical woodpecker flight of an up and down path. The flicker's diet is mostly insects, including ants. They eat termites, beetles, caterpillars, fruits, and berries. Mourning DoveNamed because of its seemingly sorrowful song, this is a common resident of backyard feeding stations, where it prefers feeding on the ground or from a platform feeder. Lesser GoldfinchAsmall, seed-eating finch of the Southwest,this birdcomes in two forms: a dark-backed one in Texas, and a greenish-backed one farther westward. House FinchA native western bird, this bird is very similar to the Purple Finch except with more distinct streaked flanks. Males have reddish foreheads, breasts and rumps.
