Each bird species has an ecological niche (role) they fill in their environment.
The role is determined by the food they eat and what eats them, also whether they hunt for food at night or in the day, on the ground or in the trees.
The nesting materials they use as well as where they build their nests also determine the niche. Birds may occupy the same area but have different roles in their communities (insect eaters versus seedeaters).
For example, the Northern Flicker keeps the ant population down while the Evening Grosbeak feeds on seeds.
